Abstract

The problem of motion is one of the most

important fundaments for the creation of the new

physics. For Leibniz, it was the starting point to

disregard the Cartesian mechanistic philosophy and

to reinstate Aristotle’s notion of entelechia as a

concept that could explain the most intimate

activity of matter. The present paper aims to

analyze the development of the concept of motion

and its relationship to the notion of substance, using

Leibniz’ works under Huygens mentoring to begin,

and moving on to the publication of Leibniz’ works

in which he consolidates the new science of

dynamics.
