Abstract
This article aims to criticize those theories that argue that Gracián was an author
who may be located intellectually within the Modernity. I will analyze how all
Gracián´s thinking is focused in the idea of God. For what it´s going to be used an
exclusive notion of “modernity” based essentially in two terms: “secularization” and
“disenchantment”. Bearing in mind this notion of “modernity”, I will defend that the
theology of the author takes him away from the Modernity because of his attacks to the
individualism and his forgetfulness of the self-care for the sake of seeking God.
