Abstract
Among the many locations that have been
considered in the attempt to find a real
reference to Plato's story of Atlantis, one of the
most widely accepted among the academic
community has been the one pointing to the
Aegean scenario, either in Crete or Santorini.
In this article we are witnessing the genesis of
the Aegean hypothesis that took place in the
early 20th century, and its progressive
reformulations coming from a number of
authors who followed the path marked out as a
result of the findings made about Minoan
Crete. At the end of the article, a critical
assessment of the proposal is presented.
