Abstract
The resurgence of teleological proposals in the field of the philosophy of science is largely due to the problem that the notion of biological function aroused among scientists and philosophers. This notion, appreciated in biological science, not seem to be understood by contemporary causal or scientific explanation. While the concept of cause in science is mainly the efficient cause, the notion of function would make reference to the final causality, so it represents a problem to the philosophy of science, whose prerogative is the rejection of all purpose and its corresponding metaphysics.
So, during the second half of the twentieth century aroused some scientific explanation models that tried to solve this problem.
The proposal of an Aristotelian teleology, developed in recent years, advances in this direction. It is a renovated Aristotelianism that provides some clues that would solve the dilemma teleology- function- causality and would be exempt of disadvantages which science wants to avoid with the current teleological explanations.
