Abstract
The aim of this paper is to point out the relationship between the historical discourse built upon the beginning of the age of European exploration (XV-XVI centuries) and the
development of modern scientific thought grounded on the basis of experientia and inventio. Travels at the age of European exploration entail a critical review of knowledge building mechanisms and, more specifically, the link between observed facts and the speech describing
such facts. On this basis, the process of conceptual construction of the idea of a New World, i. e., the experientia and the inventio of the New World, leads up to a transformation of the concepts and build up of experientia and inventio, such as it is observed in the transition from
José de Acosta’s texts to Francis Bacon’s works.
