Abstract
The main object of this paper is to examine Blumenberg’s monumental work Die Legitimität der Neuzeit. We will first present Blumenberg’s criticism of secularization theorems, and his own defense of the functional continuity between the Middle and Modern Ages. Secondly, we will display Blumenberg’s view of modernity consisting in the second and successful overcoming of Gnosticism; a point we will finally complement with the thesis that such overcoming resulted at the end of the Middle Ages from the theological absolutism of Nominalism.
