Abstract

The Lalia Group revives a fictional dialogue, dated 2002, between Jakob, a linguist, Héctor, a philologist, and Horacio, a mathematician. Their conversation examines how language should be approached and questions the academic fragmentation of contemporary linguistics. The speakers discuss the methodological importance of order, the distinction between language system and speech, the temporality of discourse, and the relationship between analysis and synthesis. Drawing on analogies with geometry and algebra, they explore the difference between successive linguistic production and the timeless structure of the system, while warning against merely metaphorical uses of mathematics. The discussion ultimately turns to writing, its connections with thought, languages, and mathematics, and the need to distinguish among a theory of language, general linguistics, and a theory of writing.
