Abstract
This article examines the main challenges philosophy must face in the twenty-first century in the context of a global transformation shaped by the end of the Cold War, globalization, economic inequality, scientific and technological revolutions, ecological crisis, biotechnology, violence, and the subordination of education to technocratic and market-oriented criteria. Gabriel Vargas Lozano argues that these changes have produced a new “figure of the world” that requires philosophy to engage in dialogue with the natural and social sciences while preserving its critical, ethical and political role. The article calls for a practical philosophy that does not remain confined to academia, but addresses the major problems affecting citizens: social justice, equality, freedom, violence, democracy, bioethics and the meaning of education. Against the marginalization of philosophy in educational systems and public debate, the author defends its value as an exercise of free thought, rational argumentation, criticism of power and civic formation. The central conclusion is that philosophy remains indispensable for understanding the present, imagining possible futures and contributing to the construction of a more just and dignified world.
